SIR JOHN VANBRUGH (), British dramatist and architect, was born in the parish of St Nicolas Aeons in the City of London, and christened on the 24th of January His grandfather, Gillis van Brugg, of Ghent, migrated to England in the reign of James I., was naturalized, resided as a merchant and was buried in the parish of St Stephen's Walbrook. Sir John Vanbrugh, who fared very badly at the doctor's hands, replied—and, on the whole, with great spirit and considerable success—in a pamphlet entitled ' A Short Vindication of " The Relapse " and "The Provok'd Wife" from Immorality and Profaneness.' In this reply he strikes out this bold apophthegm. John Vanbrugh was of Flemish background, the grandson of a Haarlem merchant named van Brugg. John was born in London, the 4th child of Giles Vanbrugh, a cloth-merchant. He was raised in Chester after his family fled London in the wake of the Great Fire and Plague.
